plus the aforementioned Rotfest review:

2010music 6/6: Albums

This is difficult. I make a list of albums I’ve enjoyed, and then I go through them and choose works that somehow stand above others. I make no claim that these are THE BEST releases this year in some objective sense. I’ll call them “probably my favorites.” I guess these are the albums from the year that I’d take with me to an island if I had to choose. As a note I do try to avoid heavily repeating closely related material… so if there are two great Autechre albums (there were this year), I’m probably just choosing one. If I enjoyed ten Fennesz-style albums, I’m not including all of them. Makes sense for the island.

These are in no particular order.

Strong Arm Steady – In Search of Stoney Jackson (Stones Throw)
Rangda – False Flag (Drag City)
Oneohtrix Point Never – Returnal (Editions Mego)
Onra – Long Distance (All City)
Autechre – Oversteps (Warp)
BJ Nilsen – The Invisible City (Touch)
Flying Lotus – Cosmogramma (Warp)
Charles Lloyd – Mirror (ECM)
Shad – TSOL (Decon Records)
Arkhonia – Trails / Traces (White Box)
Supersilent – 10 (Rune Grammofon)
Mark Fell – Multistability (Raster-Noton)
Darkstar – North (Hyperdub)
Nocando – Jimmy the Lock

Yeasayer – Odd Blood
Nneka – Concrete Jungle
2Mex – My Fanbase Will Destroy You

Comments: to see my own album alongside people I have admired is…fucking weird: Brian Eno? Baby Dee? Nurse With Wound? Fennesz? Jim O’Rourke for fucks’ sake? And mentioned in the same exahalation of (virtual) breath as one of the most joyous recordings I heard all last year, OTO by Decoy & Joe McPhee? Obviously I would not dare to assume that my own music deserves to be in the same company as, say, Harry Hosono‘s sublime retake of Burt Bacharach’s Close To You…but one cannot be but more than pleased. Who wouldn’t be?

Thank you for listening. And a Happy New Year.
