Despite not finishing all of this as promised, there is an end to this rambling thesis. There was always a conclusion, even if the many digressions (and the distraction of The Beach Boys reunion) have taken me away from that aim.
But one delusion I have never been under is that of a readership. There seem to be a handful of people who keep track of new posts – but, while I intend upon staying cogent, I can’t say that I necessarily write to be read.
So I was somewhat taken aback, when, a few days ago, blog traffic increased fivefold. What on earth?
Seems that one of the interweb’s many Beach Boys communities had linked to a post here, with the comment
has anyone else read this? It’s quite a detailed study.
It is. But obviously it’s not for everyone – and a regular reader here felt that some aspects of what I was posting were maybe a little too much for that particular messageboard – and told them so:
…he *really*, *REALLY* doesn’t like Mike Love, and his posts about Smile are definitely from that point-of-view.
This is a little inaccurate – I don’t like what Mike Love represents within the Beach Boys saga. In other words I’m really commenting on the received narrative of ‘Mike Love’, within the received narrative of the ‘Beach Boys’ story, but obviously I do not know the actual man himself. He could be a charmer. I’m relying upon documentary evidence, which suggests his role within the Beach Boys was somewhat less than egalitarian – but that’s his day job – almost entirely based on second hand information, other opinions, and a few “quotes” which could be misleading.
Reports such as these, and indeed my own, either from the world of music journalism or from fans, can be exercises in oversimplification in order to make a good drama. All stories need heroes and villains. However, it is possible to say how it seems to me based on these scraps of evidence, but I’m aware that this is all it can be.*
thesis is that the current reunion is part of a longer-term PR campaign by Love to ensure that Brian’s best work is largely ignored in favour of the stuff where Love is more prominent, and to reduce the importance of Smile to the group’s image.
Well yeah…but, again, I make this argument with a fair amount of documented and evidential support.
And it’s not like I’m really out on a limb with this: Google Mike+Love+idiot [or whichever-insulting-epithet-you-feel-best-describes-the-man] and you’ll see what I mean. Google Mike+Love+genius [or whichever-complimentary-epithet-you-feel-best-describes-the-man] and all you will see is sarcasm.

Need I go on? I’m not the only person who has ever thought these things…but, unlike all of the above, I’m attempting to support some rather more serious observations with some rather more serious research…
However, reassuringly, since the above warning/apologia was kindly posted by my cautious reader (and on my behalf) – and after two days of giddy excitement (see graph) – my stats have dropped back down to normal
and I now can return to a consideration of what Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys mean to me, unhindered by an incurious readership.
And where next?
‘Aruba, Jamaica, ooh I wanna take ya…’
